Thermostat for Volvo Penta engines
The thermostat ensures correct operating temperature of your engine. The temperature is being displayed in the instrument panel of your boat. If the meter measures temperatures that are too high, this is due to blockage of the cooling water inlet, cooling pipes, heat exchanger or a broken impeller. If the meter measures a temperature that is too low, it is due to a faulty thermostat. Replacing the thermostat
There is no interval for replacing the thermostat, but it is an item that you should check every year if you want your engine to stay proper. Check the thermostat at the beginning or end of each boating season. There Is a trick you can test whether the thermostat is working properly. When you remove the thermostat and place it in a pan of water with a thermometer and heat it, the thermostat should open at 60 degrees and open fully at 64 degrees (with heat exchanger at 74 degrees and 87 degrees). If the thermostat does not open, it must be replaced. Replacing the thermostat is generally not a big job. Drain some cooling water, remove the cooling water connections from the thermostat housing and remove the thermostat cover. Then remove the thermostat. We recommend that you immediately replace the gaskets. Tip: always have a spare thermostat on board. Most thermostats are supplied with a gasket and thus form a complete thermostat set.
