Operation of the oil filter
A good oil filter is necessary to guarantee the quality of the oil. A running petrol or diesel engine pumps the oil between all moving parts. When the engine oil passes through these parts, friction occurs. Due to this friction, dirt particles can come loose and thus end up in the engine. The oil filter filters out these particles and thus ensures that the dirt particles do not get into the rotating parts of the engine. It is therefore important to replace the oil filter in time, this will extend the life of your Volvo Penta engine. To ensure good oil quality, we recommend replacing the oil filter every 100 operating hours. If you can't replace it when it would usually be recommended we think putting in a replacement every sailing season is the next best thing.

Problems with the oil filter
When there are problems with the oil filter, the filter can clog, stick to the bypass valve, or cause mechanical damage. The symptoms of a malfunctioning oil filter are often oil leakage, swelling of the filter housing, engine overheating, or high oil consumption. A defective oil filter is difficult to spot, so keep a record of when the filter was last replaced. To prevent defects, we recommend higher quality greases, use of higher quality oil filter, proper installation of the filter, and use of the correct type of oil.

Replacing the oil filter
As mentioned earlier, replacing the oil filter is a relatively simple job. If it is a screw-on filter, unscrew the old filter, clean the surface where the filter was, and then screw on the new filter. When the new filter goes on it is best to lubricate the filter a little with some oil. In our webshop, you will also find useful tools (oil filter key) to replace the oil filter. When you replace the oil filter, it is also recommended to change the engine oil, this can be done with the help of an oil drain pump that goes in through the opening of the oil dipstick.
