Function gaskets and O-rings
When there are two parts on top of each other where oil, air or (cool) liquid passes, such as at the water pump, crankcase, impeller, water pipes, head gasket, injectors, timing cover, carburetor, valve cover gasket, the oil cooler, exhaust manifold, turbo gaskets, but also fire plates for the diesel injectors can leak. A gasket or an o-ring prevents fluid leakage. Full block gasket kits are available for most engines. In some cases there is also an alternative to a gasket, namely DP300, this is a tube with a liquid gasket in it, this you lubricate on the place where the gasket normally is and when it is dry it has the same effect as a normal gasket.
Replacing gaskets and O-rings
It is often quite easy to tell if a gasket or o-ring needs to be replaced, for example when the gasket is worn out or when you have a fluid leak where an O-ring / gasket is located. The amount of work required for replacement depends on where the gasket or O-ring is located. Sometimes only one nut has to be loosened. But it can also be a lot more complicated. This depends on where the gasket or O-ring is. Tip: It is always handy to have spare gaskets for the pump cover of the raw water pump on board.
By getting the right and using the right equipment you can worry less about cleaning most of your engine. Leakage is still possible of course but it's better to prevent most of it so to keep you engine in the best condition it can be.
