Impellers for the Volvo Penta Motor

Suitable for engines: many models including AQ105, AQ 170, B30, 2001, 2002, MD5, MD7 At an annual service of your Volvo Penta, the impeller is replaced preventively because is the the most important part of the water pump. A faulty impeller can cause the motor to overheat. You can easily replace this part yourself. At the Nordicar Marine web-shop you will find a wide range of parts for a good price, we're even up to 20% cheaper than at the Volvo Penta dealer.

What is an impeller?
An impeller, also called an impeller or paddle wheel, is a rotating paddle wheel in the water pump of an engine. The impeller ensures the flow of (cooling) water through the engine block. In this way the engine of your boat is cooled. The core of the impeller is made of metal and is mounted on the shaft of the water pump. The blades are made out of rubber.

When should you replace the impeller?
As a rule, it is advisable to replace the impeller every year. When starting the engine, the impeller wears out quick because it isn't lubricated by the water. To be on the safe side, take an extra impeller on board to be able to carry out necessary replacement in case something happens. Check that the impeller is working properly each time you start the engine. If you feel that the water jet from the motor is getting less and less, or that there is no water jet, replace the impeller immediately.

Replacing the impeller
Replacing the impeller is quite easy to perform. There are a number of basic things to keep in mind. When removing the old impeller, pay attention to the direction of rotation of the pump. The blades are slightly curved in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation. Make sure that the blades of the new impeller are bent in the same direction. Check that there are no chipped impeller debris left in the water pump and cooling system. In any case, make sure that the new impeller is coated with a little acid-free Vaseline before you place it in. Before starting the engine, check the operation of the impeller by cranking the engine on the starter motor. The manuals describe how to replace the impeller.

We recommend buying an impeller kit to make it as easy as possible, that way you don't have to worry about buying lots of spare parts you don't need. We have a great offer on our site for multiple types of Penta engines. If there is a different item you need like the pump, hose or filter, we have a large stock of volvo penta engine parts and equipment.
